USTDA Supports Nairobi's Efforts to Modernize its Wastewater Infrastructure

NAIROBI, KENYA – On September 19, 2011, USTDA awarded a $371,508 grant to the
Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Kenya, acting through the Athi Water
Services Board (AWSB), to assess options to modernize the Kariobangi wastewater
treatment facility in Nairobi. Successful redevelopment of the Kariobangi
facility will reduce pollution in the Athi River and Indian Ocean, and reduce
energy consumption at the wastewater plant.
The study will provide AWSB options for increasing the facility's capacity,
compare sludge processing technologies, and also evaluate sludge-to-energy
technologies. In addition, the study will also include a detailed description of
U.S. technological solutions that are available to modernize the facility.
Given the growing business potential for wastewater treatment technology in
Kenya, USTDA assistance for this type of project is integral to positioning U.S.
companies to win market share. Already, AWSB representatives have expressed
interest in implementing the project using high quality U.S. wastewater products
and technologies.
"Modernization of the Kariobangi facility will reduce pollution, provide
opportunities for U.S. firms, and create a model for sustainable water
infrastructure development throughout Kenya," said USTDA Director Leocadia I
Zak. "This project is a priority for the Government of Kenya and USTDA is proud
to support it."
The feasibility study will be carried out by Coler & Colantonio, Inc. of
Norwell, MA.
