Supporting Wind Energy Development on Chiloé
SANTIAGO, CHILE – USTDA awarded a grant today
to Empresa Eólica Tablaruca S.A. (Tablaruca
Wind Company or "Tablaruca") in support of its
efforts to develop a wind farm of approximately
99 megawatts (MW) on the Chilean island of
Chiloé. As Chile seeks to expand its domestic
sources of energy, this project will play an
important role in diversifying the country's
renewable energy mix. The USTDA grant is
supporting a feasibility study that will help
Tablaruca determine the technical, economic,
financial and environmental viability of a wind
farm on Chiloé.
Jacob Flewelling, USTDA Country Manager for
Chile and Mauricio Zeman, General Manager of
Tablaruca, signed the $610,000 grant. Nicole Y.
Lamb-Hale, Assistant Secretary for
Manufacturing and Services of the U.S.
Department of Commerce, and Maria Ignacia
Benitez, the Minister of Environment of Chile,
witnessed the signing.
"USTDA is pleased to partner with Tablaruca on
the development of clean energy resources in
Chile, which has tremendous wind energy
potential." said Nathan Younge, USTDA Regional
Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
"When implemented, this project will provide
substantial opportunities for U.S. firms active
in the wind energy market."
The grant awarded today reflects USTDA's
strategy of mobilizing U.S. private sector
expertise to meet priority development
objectives in emerging markets like Chile.
The opportunity to conduct the USTDA-funded
feasibility study will be competed on the
Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website. A
link to the FBO announcement will be posted to
USTDA's website at www.ustda.gov. Interested
U.S. firms should submit proposals according to
the instructions in the FBO announcement.
