ARLINGTON, Va – The U.S. Trade and Development
Agency awarded a grant to Belize Water Services
Limited to support the deployment of integrated
clean energy solutions at four of the utility’s
main water treatment plants. The feasibility
study will evaluate the use of wind power,
solar power, energy storage and energy
efficiency technologies at the Belmopan, Caye
Caulker, Dangriga and Double Run water
treatment plants.
“USTDA is pleased to support this important
clean energy project,” said USTDA Director
Leocadia I. Zak. “Using a combination of
renewable energy and energy efficiency
technologies has the potential to reduce Belize
Water Services’ electricity costs for water
treatment.”
Chief Executive Officer of Belize Water
Services Limited, Alvan Haynes, stated, “Belize
Water Services is excited about this
opportunity, which will help us attain
increased efficiencies and improved continuity
of service. At the same time, this project
assists with other key corporate objectives,
including improving stakeholder relationships
and reducing environmental impacts.”
The feasibility study will be carried out by E3
International LLC, a sustainable energy
consulting firm based in Bethesda, MD.
This project supports the goals of the Clean
Energy Finance Facility for the Caribbean and
Central America (CEFF-CCA), an interagency
initiative to catalyze greater public and
private sector investment in clean energy
infrastructure across Central America and the
Caribbean.
